Jazz Ensemble and Combo Audition Excerpts - MTSU Spring 2022

All auditions for Jazz auditions will be required for the following students:

  • Students who wish to participate in Jazz Ensemble I must play a jazz ensemble audition

  • Students wishing to perform in a jazz combo who did not participate in one in Fall 2021

 Jazz Ensemble II does not require an audition, please enter your information at https://tinyurl.com/y6fojvkt and register for the course!

 Jazz Ensemble Audition requirements:

  1. Enter your availability and contact information at https://tinyurl.com/y6fojvkt .

  2. Record yourself (private youtube video or mp3 audio) performing your given prepared excerpt. Clearly state your name, major, instrument, and year in school. Excerpts are found at http://www.jameysimmons.com/educationblog

  3. If you wish to improvise in the band, perform a 2 chorus blues improvisation with a play-along.

  4. Drummers should perform additional 16-bar sections of the following grooves:

    1. Samba

    2. Fast swing

    3. Medium swing with brushes

    4. Jazz waltz

Jazz Combo Audition requirements:

  1. Enter your availability and contact information at https://tinyurl.com/y6fojvkt

  2. Record yourself (private youtube video or mp3 audio) performing. At the beginning clearly state your name, major, instrument, and year in school.

  3. Excerpts (Tenor Madness) are found at http://www.jameysimmons.com/educationblog

  4. Perform the melody (1x) and then a 2 chorus improvisation over the form. You are encouraged to use a play-along.

  5. Drummers should play the melody on the drum kit, then one chorus of time, and solo for an additional chorus.

  6. Piano, guitar, bass, and vibes should comp/walk for a chorus.

  8. Vocalists, sing the melody of a jazz standard with a play along.
